Spirit Week-Week in Review

Spirit Week went through Pre-K like a whirlwind! We always have the best intentions to take lots of photos each week, but with 20 preschoolers in a room, things get a bit crazy! Here are a few highlights from our week:

Decade Day
Yee Haw Day
The afternoon class had a special treat Wednesday. Some of the Rocket varsity players visited Washington School and spent time teaching our students some football basics. The students especially enjoyed trying on the shoulder pads and helmet.
Ready for the game!
Learning how to throw the football
Working on hand offs

We ended the week with Purple and Gold Day! If your child is in the morning class, please check next week's Rushville Times. There were several students who were photographed by a Times' reporter this morning before school!

Spirit Week

I almost forgot...Spirit Week is next week! The dress-up days for Washington School are as follows:

Monday-Decades Day
Tuesday-Yee Haw Day (cowboy or farmer)
Wednesday-Wacky Day (crazy hair, clothes, etc)
Thursday-Purple and Gold Day

I can't wait to see what my students come up with! It should be a fun week!

Week in Review

It's been a busy week! Who are we kidding? It's always busy in Pre-K!

listening to a friend read a story in the reading area

This week we kicked off our tree study by talking about the size of trees and the different parts of trees. We read a book that is a favorite each year, Abiyoyo, which is a retelling of a story about a giant who is defeated by a small boy and his father.

This is the audio version of the story we read. The students love to help with the magic wand sound effects! Abiyoyo is the giant in the story and we talked about things, like giants, that are bigger than trees while we were discussing size.

A special thanks as well to all who have sent in items they've collected from trees! We have quite a collection so far and the students are enjoying exploring all of the different items.

Wednesday the students participated in a lesson about butterflies presented by Ms. Sarah from the Farm Bureau. As part of the Ag in the Classroom program we will be visited once a month and a lesson on a topic related to farming will be presented.

Thursday we had a special visitor, Happy Bear. He and his friends came to share ways we can be safe in a variety of situations.

New Week, New Friend

We have another little friend in our class...Frodo the Betta fish joined our room over the weekend. The students are having fun watching him while they are in the reading area. We are also working on responsibility by having the Pet Helper feed him each day.
Checking out our new friend, Frodo.

Students were also excited to try out the new playground equipment on Monday! Thanks to the many volunteers who gave of their time and resources to make this possible for our school!

Update!

We have an update already! Our little caterpillar was sneaky this morning and formed his/her chrysalis while we were playing in the gym.
Monarch chrysalis
We will keep watching! It can take 10-14 days for the butterfly to emerge!

Week in Review

It's Friday again! We've had a busy week as usual in Pre-K! Sorry for the lack of posts; we were so involved in our activities that the time got away from us.

This week we were focusing on families and friends. We read several books about different types of families and worked together to make a chart that describes what families look like, what they do, and what they are. Thanks to everyone who returned the All About Me pages. We will be making them into class books ASAP! This week we also read about how to be a good friend. Our discussions included ways to enter into play with others, how to handle disagreements, and how to show the Rocket Way to Be.

Yesterday we gained another critter in our room!

I found this little guy in my yard Wednesday night and brought him in for the class to observe. He has already moved into his "J" shape and I'm sure will be in a chrysalis before tomorrow morning. We'll keep you posted on his progress!

Welcome Dobby!

Today we welcomed the newest friend in our room, Dobby the Leopard Gecko! The students were excited about our new addition. I'm not sure that Dobby is as excited as they are! It's a bit noisier and brighter than he's used to!

Week in Review

This week was "All About Me"! We read a variety of books that celebrated the differences among us...our hair color, eye color, family members, homes we live in, food we like, etc. We made graphs of our hair and eye color, favorite colors, favorite activities, and favorite foods.

New this week was our color of the week. We started off with RED and we will continue to work our way through the rainbow! Each week the students learn a new color song which not only teaches them to recognize the color, but also to spell the color word. A copy of the color song and it's tune went home with each child yesterday. Thanks so much for sending in red items. Here is what you helped create:

We will make a poster like this each week. They create a great visual reminder in our room of each color and how they are spelled.

Next week we are going to be focusing on families and friends. Thanks for sending in family photos for our room! They make a great addition to the dramatic play area. If you haven't sent in yours, it's not too late!

This Week:
Theme: All About Us
Color: Red
Skills: Name recognition, following 2-step directions, identifying shapes, identifying colors, identifying numerals 1-10, counting out loud, counting with one-to-one correspondance (one number for each item), uppercase letter recognition, managing transitions...and so many more!

Next Week:

The Sun Will Come Out...

Well, the sun may have come out, but after an entire morning of heavy rain our playground was a big pile of mush and mud! We had our gym time, but we needed to get some fresh air in the afternoon as well. Time for bubbles! The class had a great time seeing who could blow the most at once and who could catch a bubble on their wand. We will have to make sure the morning class has their chance at this activity soon!
Bubbles are fun, but very sticky!
These girls mastered catching a bubble on their wands!

All About Us!

This week we are discussing what makes each of our students special and unique! On Wednesday we made a chart of our favorite colors.

Please check your student's agenda book for an "All About Me" sheet! We are going to use them to create a class book. Thanks for your help!

Week in Review

This week we read books about the start of the school year. We also reviewed/learned the PBIS expectations for the different areas in our school. These areas included the hallways, classroom, bathroom, playground, and the bus. Students began earning tickets for demonstrating the Rocket Way to Be and they are excited to participate in next week's ticket drawing.

These boys are proud of their Lego creations!

The sensory tables are always busy.

We are learning to serve ourselves at the snack table.

The store is open for business!

Next week our theme will be "All About Me." We will be creating a class book, with a page from each student included in it, that displays information about us. We would also like to add family pictures to the wall in our housekeeping center.  Please watch for the instructions for the All About Me papers to come home!
