October Pre-K Family Night!

Don't miss our next family event!

Children are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes,
but it is not a requirement.

Week in Review

This week we have been exploring apples...from how they grow, what we can make with them,  which ones are our favorites, and everything in between!  We've taste-tested apple juice and apple cider and red, yellow, and green apples. The children also assisted in making applesauce on Thursday and had some for snack on Friday.
We chopped a lot of apples!
Working on peeling and chopping.
Andrea is patiently waiting for a turn to chop apples.
Zane said he used all of his muscles to work the peeler!

Other activities with apples included discovering what items in our room weighed more or less than an apple and describing the growth cycle of an apple.

What's happening?

Monarch #1
We've had a lot going on this week in pre-K!  Our week started off with the emergence of our first Monarch butterfly from its chrysalis! The morning class discovered it and were able to watch it drink some water and sip some nectar from flowers we "borrowed" from the school landscaping. The afternoon class had the pleasure of releasing the butterfly. It wasted no time in flying off...I'm sure the cool weather at the beginning of the week had it heading for Mexico!

The classes were also excited this week to explore new toys in our room. The biggest hit so far has been the new building set we have called Squigz. They are basically suction cups attached by flexible silicone pieces. As you can see, the students were having fun seeing just what they could get the pieces to stick to in the room. We had a quite a few unicorns!

The weather on Wednesday started out wet, but we were able to sneak back outside for our bike day and a little chalk and bubble time.
Zander and Edy made a railroad for the bikes to travel on!

Spirit Week-Week in Review

Spirit Week went through Pre-K like a whirlwind! We always have the best intentions to take lots of photos each week, but with 20 preschoolers in a room, things get a bit crazy! Here are a few highlights from our week:

Decade Day
Yee Haw Day
The afternoon class had a special treat Wednesday. Some of the Rocket varsity players visited Washington School and spent time teaching our students some football basics. The students especially enjoyed trying on the shoulder pads and helmet.
Ready for the game!
Learning how to throw the football
Working on hand offs

We ended the week with Purple and Gold Day! If your child is in the morning class, please check next week's Rushville Times. There were several students who were photographed by a Times' reporter this morning before school!

Spirit Week

I almost forgot...Spirit Week is next week! The dress-up days for Washington School are as follows:

Monday-Decades Day
Tuesday-Yee Haw Day (cowboy or farmer)
Wednesday-Wacky Day (crazy hair, clothes, etc)
Thursday-Purple and Gold Day

I can't wait to see what my students come up with! It should be a fun week!

Week in Review

It's been a busy week! Who are we kidding? It's always busy in Pre-K!

listening to a friend read a story in the reading area

This week we kicked off our tree study by talking about the size of trees and the different parts of trees. We read a book that is a favorite each year, Abiyoyo, which is a retelling of a story about a giant who is defeated by a small boy and his father.

This is the audio version of the story we read. The students love to help with the magic wand sound effects! Abiyoyo is the giant in the story and we talked about things, like giants, that are bigger than trees while we were discussing size.

A special thanks as well to all who have sent in items they've collected from trees! We have quite a collection so far and the students are enjoying exploring all of the different items.

Wednesday the students participated in a lesson about butterflies presented by Ms. Sarah from the Farm Bureau. As part of the Ag in the Classroom program we will be visited once a month and a lesson on a topic related to farming will be presented.

Thursday we had a special visitor, Happy Bear. He and his friends came to share ways we can be safe in a variety of situations.

New Week, New Friend

We have another little friend in our class...Frodo the Betta fish joined our room over the weekend. The students are having fun watching him while they are in the reading area. We are also working on responsibility by having the Pet Helper feed him each day.
Checking out our new friend, Frodo.

Students were also excited to try out the new playground equipment on Monday! Thanks to the many volunteers who gave of their time and resources to make this possible for our school!
